Go Rummy Rules – 13 Card Indian Rummy Explained

The complete complete rules of 13-card Indian rummy as played on Go Rummy: card values, sequences, sets, jokers, scoring and game modes.

Basics

What Is Rummy?

Rummy is a card game where each player receives 13 cards and must arrange them into valid sequences and sets before the opponents do. On Go Rummy, the game is played with two standard decks of 52 cards plus four printed jokers. The first player to declare a valid hand wins the round; in cash games, the winner takes the prize pool.

Rummy is classified as a game of skill in India – the Supreme Court of India has repeatedly upheld that rummy falls under the "mere skill" exception to gambling laws. That is why rummy apps are legal in most Indian states. However, a few states ban cash rummy, so Go Rummy is not available in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Sikkim, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

13 Card Rummy

Complete 13 Card Indian Rummy Rules

Cards, players and the deal

  • Decks: two standard 52-card decks + 4 printed jokers (104 cards + 4 jokers).
  • Players: 2 to 6 players per table on Go Rummy.
  • Deal: each player receives 13 cards, dealt one by one, clockwise.
  • Open card: one card is placed face-up to start the discard pile; the rest form the closed deck (stock).
  • Wild joker: the card matching the open card's value (all four suits) becomes the wild joker for that game.

The objective

Arrange all 13 cards into valid sequences and sets, with at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence (no joker). A hand without a pure sequence can never be declared – this is the rule beginners fail most.

Sequences and sets

  • Pure sequence: 3+ consecutive cards of the same suit, no jokers. Example: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥.
  • Impure sequence: 3+ consecutive cards of the same suit with one or more jokers replacing a card. Example: 5♥ 6♥ Q♠(joker).
  • Set: 3 or 4 cards of the same value, different suits. Example: 7♠ 7♥ 7♦. Sets can use jokers, but never two cards of the same suit.

Turn flow

  1. On your turn, draw one card – from the closed deck or the top of the discard pile.
  2. Discard one unwanted card face-up on the discard pile.
  3. Arrange your hand into sequences and sets at any time during your turn.
  4. When your hand is valid, press Declare and show your 13 cards.

Joker rules

  • Printed jokers can replace any card in an impure sequence or a set.
  • The wild joker (matching the open card's value) can also replace any card.
  • Jokers cannot be used in a pure sequence.
  • Two jokers in the same sequence are allowed (impure).

Scoring system (Points Rummy)

  • Card values: Ace = 10 points, face cards (K, Q, J) = 10 points, number cards = face value (2–10).
  • Printed and wild jokers = 0 points.
  • Each ungrouped card in a losing hand counts its value against the player.
  • If a player declares an invalid hand (no pure sequence), they lose with 80 points (full count).
  • First drop (before first move) = 20 points; middle drop = 40 points (typical rules – check the table settings).
  • Points are settled by multiplying the losing player's point count by the table's point value.

Drops and the max points rule

You can drop (quit) a game instead of playing it out. Dropping early limits your loss to 20–40 points depending on timing. When a player reaches the maximum points threshold (usually 80 in Points Rummy), they are eliminated from the table.

Responsible gaming

  • 18+ only. Go Rummy does not allow players under 18 to register or play.
  • Set your own limits: use the deposit limit and daily play-time settings in the app to control how much you spend.
  • Self-exclusion: players can request a temporary or permanent self-exclusion from the app's support team.
  • Never chase losses – rummy is a game of skill, but real-money play carries financial risk. Only play with money you can afford to lose.

Play smart, play safe

Set a budget before you join a table, take regular breaks, and contact support if you feel your playing is becoming a problem. Help is available 24/7.

Game Modes

Points Rummy vs Pool vs Deals

Mode How it works Best for
Points Rummy One round per game. Winner takes the pot; losers pay their point value × table stake. Fast games, beginners
Pool Rummy Players accumulate points over multiple rounds (101 or 201 pool). Eliminated at the limit; last player standing wins. Longer sessions, strategy
Deals Rummy A fixed number of deals (usually 2 or 6). Winner of each deal takes chips; highest chip total wins. Fixed-length tournaments
Mistakes

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Declaring without a pure sequence – the #1 cause of invalid declarations and 80-point losses.
  • Hoarding high cards – face cards and aces cost 10 points each if you lose. Drop early if your hand is bad.
  • Using jokers in the pure sequence – keep your pure sequence clean and use jokers to complete impure sequences and sets.
  • Ignoring the discard pile – an opponent discarding near your needed card is a strong signal of their hand.
  • Playing every hand – a smart middle drop beats an 80-point loss every time.
