Learn to play Go Rummy in six simple steps: from downloading the app to making your first valid declaration. No experience needed.

Beginner Guide

Getting Started in Six Steps

  1. 1

    Download and register

Download Go Rummy from official channels, install, and register with your mobile number + OTP.

  2. 2

    Choose practice or cash

Start with free practice tables to learn the flow, then move to low-stake cash tables when confident.

  3. 3

    Sort your 13 cards

Group by suit and by value. Spot potential sequences (consecutive same-suit cards) and sets (same value, different suits).

  4. 4

    Build your pure sequence first

Complete at least one pure sequence (no jokers) early. Everything else – impure sequences and sets – can use jokers.

  5. 5

    Watch the discard pile

Pick cards from the pile only when useful. Avoid discarding cards that complete an opponent's hand.

  6. 6

    Declare when valid

Two sequences (one pure) + all remaining cards grouped = valid hand. Tap Declare and win the round.

Glossary

Rummy Terms Every Player Should Know

Sequence

Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, e.g. 4♠ 5♠ 6♠. A valid hand needs at least two sequences.

Pure Sequence

A sequence with no jokers at all. Every valid declaration must include one pure sequence.

Set

Three or four cards of the same value in different suits, e.g. 9♣ 9♠ 9♥. Sets may include jokers.

Joker

A printed joker or the wild joker (matching the open card). It substitutes any missing card – but not in a pure sequence.

Drop

Leaving a game early. First drop costs 20 points, middle drop 40 points – usually cheaper than losing with a bad hand.

Declare

Showing your hand as valid. If valid, you win the round; if invalid, you lose with 80 points.

Strategy

Beginner Strategy Tips

  • Prioritise the pure sequence – build it within the first 3–4 turns; everything else can wait.
  • Discard high cards early – aces, kings, queens and jacks cost 10 points if you lose. Keep them only when they complete a sequence.
  • Hold jokers wisely – a joker is most valuable for completing a nearly-finished sequence, not for starting one.
  • Read discards – if an opponent discards 7♣ then 8♣, they likely have no club sequence. Use that information.
  • Know when to drop – if after 4–5 turns you have no sequence forming, a 40-point middle drop beats chasing an 80-point loss.
  • Play within your bankroll – set a daily limit for cash games and never chase losses. Responsible play keeps the game fun.
